I was considering buying a thin and light gaming laptop for awhile, and the main contenders were the MSI GS65 Thin, Razer Blade 15, ASUS Zephyrus M GM501, and Gigabyte Aero 15x. I was looking for something with good battery life, build quality, and performance. The battery life of the Zephyrus and GS65 just were not up to par, so those were less considered than the other two. I love the look of the Razer Blade 15, and the build quality looked amazing. In fact, I was originally going to purchase the Razer Blade, but on Black Friday, the going price of the Gigabyte Aero 15x was too good to ignore ($1750 before tax).I was slightly worried about the issues I had heard about backlight bleed and key chatter, but the model I received had none of those issues. There is some backlight bleed, but nothing more than what I expected for such a thin screen. And I only notice the backlight bleed during bootup, and not during normal use. So in regards to those issues, I had none of them.============================Build Quality---------------When I first took it out of the box, I was pretty surprised at how solid the laptop felt. In videos, the top of the laptop looked relatively cheap compared to its competitors, but it feels sturdy and is of high quality. My friend owns a Dell XPS 15, and while I would say that the XPS feels more solid and has an overall better build, the Aero 15x does not feel cheap.Everything except for the trim of the laptop is made of aluminum, so everything feels reliably sturdy. I thought the plastic would be an issue, but honestly, I don't notice it myself and the plastic itself feels to be of high quality. The keyboard deck does flex a tiny bit when I push hard on it, but I think that's due to how thin the laptop is and it feels solid when I'm typing on it or playing games. The hinge goes along the length of most of the laptop, so there should be no issue there in terms of longevity. The laptop can be opened with one hand, but as a consequence, the screen does wobble quite easily if I push on it. However, given that the screen is not touchscreen, this is only noticeable if I go out of my way to test the wobbliness. The screen does not wobble during typical use.One thing I am having an issue on are the two USB-A ports on the right of the machine. For some reason, they are an incredibly tight fit, and it can be difficult to unplug any devices connected to those ports. I looked online a bit in regards to this issue, and it appears like this is a design choice, and not a fault with my model specifically, so keep that in mind.In addition, the material does attract finger prints and I've noticed that the keys and the area near the trackpad have accumulated some marks due to sweat and oils. It's a relatively easy clean with some isopropyl alcohol, but do keep that in mind. There aren't any skins on dBrand for the Gigabyte Aero 15x, so there isn't much in terms of quality protection against this as of this review.When I was deciding between the Razer Blade 15 and the Aero 15x, I was tempted to go for the Blade simply due to its build quality. I will say that the Blade looks to be of a higher build quality, so if that is of utmost importance to you, you should perhaps think about getting the Blade instead. Nevertheless, I am more than satisfied with how well the Aero 15x is built.============================Screen--------The thin bezels on the screen are amazing, and it really is satisfying to look at, particularly considering that my previous laptop was a HP Spectre x360, which had some pretty thick bezels. Furthermore, having such small bezels makes the screen feel larger and shrinks the overall size of the laptop as well. This is my first time using a 144 hz panel, and it is amazing. I do not typically use the laptop outside, so I can not speak for the brightness in that scenario, but for my day to day use, the screen is certainly bright enough.As you know, the screen is color accurate and Pantone Certified. If you wish to reinstall Windows on this laptop, which I would recommend doing, be sure to back up the Pantone RGB Profile on an external drive so that you can reinstall it after reinstalling Windows (You can do so by going to C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color and copy the GGG_xxxxxx.ic file into the external drive. The xxxxxx will be different characters depending on your model). After you reinstall Window, simply copy the file back into the same folder and then use Gigabyte Smart Manager and activate Pantone.============================Keyboard-----------I heard that some people had issues with the keyboard since the numpad shifts everything to the left and the keyboard would feel cramped. I personally do not have any issues with the keyboard, and I think it's quite a pleasant typing experience. I average 105 WPM (according to typeracer) and in early tests I was doing ~8% worse than my typical speeds; now a little over a week has passed and I can type at my usual speed on this keyboard.I do have a couple small complaints on the keyboard though. While it is nice having a numpad, the numbers do feel a little cramped horizontally.The other complaint is with Gigabyte Fusion, Gigabyte's software for controlling the RGB backlighting for the keyboard. It is quite limited in terms of features, and the software is slow at best. For example, there is a "Reactive" effect (where each key lights up for a brief period as I press it), but I can not seem to figure out how to set a base color for each key. On my Razer desktop keyboard, I can have every key be, say blue, and then turn purple briefly as I press it. I can not do this with this laptop; the keys are dark by default, and then light up to my chosen color. It does not seem like I can have multiple effects at the same time either. Furthermore, while the Fusion software allows me to program macros, I can only set macros on one key at a time, and it does not allow key combinations. Hopefully future software updates will fix this.The final complaint is that there are no media controls on the keyboard, not even when I use the Fn key. This would not be an issue if I could set macros using key combinations, but as I mentioned before, this is not possible with the Fusion software. For the time being, I have the PgUp, PgDn, and End buttons as back, next, and pause, respectively.============================Touchpad------------The touchpad feels nice, and the click is satisfying. However, the touchpad uses ELAN drivers, which objectively speaking is worse than Windows Precision drivers. There is a slight workaround to improve the touchpad (Look up Dave2D's video "Upgrade Your Trackpad for Free" for more on this). The palm rejection software isn't amazing either, and I had some issues with the mouse moving when typing or playing games. However, I typically have an external mouse connected, particularly when playing games, so I disabled the trackpad and it has not bothered me since. Overall, I'm fine with the touchpad, but it's one of the weaker aspects of the laptop.============================Webcam----------There is not much to say about the webcam. The position is sub-par as it looks up your nose, and the quality is not all that great, which is typical for laptops. If you really need a good webcam, I'd look into getting an external camera or considering another machine.============================Speakers-----------The speakers are not that great. They are down-firing, so the noise already gets muffled by whatever surface your laptop is sitting on. They get a little tinny when at higher volumes, and they lack bass. Typically, you'll be wearing headphones when gaming on the device to block out the fan noise, so it usually isn't an issue. While media consumption is great on this screen, if you do not have an external audio output device, this laptop may not be for you.============================Battery Life--------------The battery life is amazing. I'm getting roughly 8-10 hours of normal use (web browsing, media consumption, etc.) and 2 hours of use while gaming with the screen at 50% and power management to balanced. However, I did have to mess with drivers to get this battery life because sometimes Nvidia Optimus would not work. I'll go into more detail on how to set this up properly in a later section. However, once it was set up properly, I could thoroughly enjoy the benefits of not having to lug the heavy charging cable around in my backpack when I go to class.============================Performance---------------As expected, the GTX 1070 Max Q crushes most games, which is great when paired with the 144 hz screen. I mostly play games that are light to moderately demanding (e.g. League of Legends and Overwatch), and I typically get about 120 hz to 144 hz on those games. In terms of temperatures, the GPU is relatively well cooled, and the highest temperatures is around 85 C for the GPU.The CPU, however, is less well-cooled. Without undervolting, I got max temperatures of 93 C when playing Overwatch. Using XTU, I undervolted to -165 mV, and that was improved temperatures to an average 87 C, maxing out at 90 C. Not a substantial improvement and there was still thermal throttling. I believe I'll have to repaste, which should help a bit more.============================Initial Setup--------------It can be quite a pain to set up this laptop properly. When you first get this machine, I highly recommend reinstalling Windows to get rid of the bloatware on it. When I initially launched the computer, I had issues with the mouse glitching out and getting Edge to launch even had some issues with lag. Reinstalling Windows fixed all these problems. For a tutorial on how to do so, Google "NotebookReview Gigabyte Aero 15x Setup and Tweaks" . Do remember to backup your Pantone Color profile. Also, when you get to the stage of installing Windows where it asks you for partition sizes, choose the partition with the largest storage size (that is where you want to install Windows). If you know what you're doing, you can delete partitions as well, including the recovery partition, but I did not mess with it.Upon reinstalling Windows, you'll want to download the OFFICIAL drivers from Gigabyte website, not necessarily the latest drivers. You can find those drivers by Googling "Gigabyte Aero 15x 8750H Drivers". Check the link I suggested prior for specific details on what to install. Be sure to install the OFFICIAL Nvidia drivers, as installing the latest drivers will cause your battery life to drop to roughly 2 hours. You can also find what drivers to install by downloading Gigabyte Smart Update from the Gigabyte link provided and then download drivers from the OFFICIAL column. I would not recommend downloading Nvidia GeForce Experience, as that can sometimes update your drivers without you wanting it to. Downloading the correct drivers is vital to having the experience you want with this machine. If you want to be able to have a great out-of-box experience and do not want to go through the rigmarole of having to reinstall Windows and download drivers, then this laptop may not be for you.If you have any problems with your machine, Google "Notebook Review Aero 15x Common Problems and Solutions". It's a compilation of various common problems people may have with the laptop and the appropriate solutions. It helped me a bunch when I was setting everything up and it should help you as well!============================Conclusion-------------Overall, I am very happy with my purchase, particularly since I got it for such a good price during the Black Friday sales. The build quality, while is not as good as that of the Dell XPS 15 and Razer Blade, is still excellent and the plastic around the trim is high quality. This machine should last you a long time given that you take good care of it. The screen is extremely color accurate and the thin bezels make the screen look amazing. It get adequately bright, but I have not tested it in sunlight. The keyboard is comfortable to type on, but the numpad can feel a little cramped and the software is lackluster. There are also no media control keys on the keyboard either. In terms of performance, the machine does incredibly well, and GPU temperatures are satisfactory, but the CPU does get hot and thermal throttles, even after being undervolted. I have not tested temperatures after repasting, but it should help stop the throttling. I recommend that when you get this machine, you back up the Pantone Color Profile, reinstall Windows, and download all the OFFICIAL drivers from Gigabyte's website or through Gigabyte Smart Update.
