Some of us still need spinny disks for bulk storage. And if you have one of the increasingly rare cases that has 2 (or more) 5.25" bays at the front, this gives you an easy way to convert them into more useful 3x 3.5" bays. The cage requires you to have at least 2 adjacent 5.25" bays available without a gap or trim piece in the way. But Icy Dock did design this for less server focused cases. Where some similar products have slab sides (for full height bays) that prevent use in cases that have locating tabs for each half-height 5.25" drive, Icy Dock made their mounting rails only half-height tall. It's worked well in every tower case I've tried (several Corsair cases, the Fractal Design R5).The unit provides power to 3x SATA/SAS drives via 2x SATA power connectors, and has connectors for 3x SATA (or single channel SAS) on the opposite side of the fan. In a conventional tower case, this means connecting power is easier if you do it before fully mounting the cage. But the SATA connectors are easy to get to if you need to.Drive sleds are made out of a very thin steel, but are well designed and should be able to outlast several hard drive replacements. And they have locating rails that make them align disks much more accurately than Icy Dock's 2.5" products. I still recommend pushing on the drive until it seats and the locking lever starts to close, just in case something is misaligned. The Good:- 80mm fan is easily user replaceable. It's held in by 2 screws and you don't have to take things apart. If it's too loud you can replace the factory fan with a Noctua NF-A8 FLX or NF-R8 redux in about 2 minutes.- Fan connector has clearance around it for a 4pin PWM fan if that's what you have on hand.- 2 pin and 3 pin fan connectors- Makes better use of 2 x 5.25 bays.- Mounting tab/rail is only 5.25" half height. No case mods required if you have a tower case with locating tabs sticking out into the 5.25" bays.- Uses the same drive sleds as Icy Dock's RAID FatCage (and seemingly discontinued 5 in 3 FatCage)The Bad:- SAS support is single channel only.- No PWM fan controlThe Meh:- Drive cages may not perfectly align SATA/SAS ports. Don't shove/force drives when installing them into the cage. Press gently until the eject lever starts to close, then use it to seat the rest of the way.- Double sided foam adhesive that's holding down a ribbon cable along the side will eventually fail to hold down the ribbon cable.- Requires 2 5.25" bays with no gaps between them.- Fan makes the cage an inch longer.
